Gravel is quoted and billed by the ton, but the math starts with volume — and because different stone weighs different amounts, the density of what you’re buying decides how many tons that volume becomes. Four steps get you from a tape measure to a number you can phone in.
Step 1 — area and depth to cubic yards
The same identity that governs mulch governs stone: one cubic yard covers 324 ft² at 1 inch deep.
cubic yards = area (ft²) × depth (in) ÷ 324
A 12 × 60 ft driveway is 720 ft². At a 4-inch top layer:
720 × 4 ÷ 324 = 8.89 cubic yards
Measure the whole gravel footprint, not the strip you drive on: the flare where the driveway meets the street, the turnaround, the parking apron beside the garage. Those are routinely forgotten and they are routinely 20% of the job.
Step 2 — cubic yards to tons
Multiply by density in tons per cubic yard. These are typical values, not constants — real density shifts with quarry, gradation, and how wet the pile is:

Our 8.89 yards of #57 at 1.4:
8.89 × 1.4 = 12.44 tons
When you genuinely don’t know, use 1.4. Several online calculators default to 1.5, which over-orders roughly 7% on typical sub-2-inch crushed stone — about a ton on this driveway.
Step 3 — add a compaction allowance
Gravel settles into itself and into the ground beneath it. A 4-inch loose lift of crusher run compacts to roughly 3 inches once it’s rolled and driven on, and some stone is always lost into ruts and soft spots.
- Compacted base and road-base layers: add 10–20%.
- Loose-laid decorative stone (pea gravel, river rock, a top dressing of #57 that you never compact): add 5–10% for spillage and uneven ground.
At 10%: 12.44 × 1.1 = 13.69 tons.
Step 4 — round the way the supplier sells
Aggregate is normally sold and rounded to the half ton, so 13.69 becomes an order of 14 tons. Round up, never down — being half a ton short means a second haul fee that can cost more than the stone it delivers.

At an estimated $50 per ton for crushed stone that’s about $700 of material, plus delivery.
Building a new driveway: it’s three layers, not one
A driveway laid straight onto dirt disappears into the dirt. A driveway built to last is 8–12 inches total in three lifts, each compacted before the next goes down. For the same 720 ft² drive at 4 inches per layer:

That is roughly $2,225 of material at $50 a ton and about three tri-axle loads. The gap between a 14-ton resurface and a 44.5-ton rebuild is the single biggest budgeting surprise in gravel driveways — decide which job you’re doing before you price anything.
Over soft clay or organic subgrade, put woven geotextile fabric down before the base layer. Without it, stone punches down into the subgrade, mixes with mud, and you re-buy the same tonnage every few years. The fabric costs a small fraction of the stone it saves.

Those numbers on the price list are standard size designations, and picking the wrong one is a real mistake, not a preference:

Regional names for the same product trip people up constantly. Crusher run is called road base, Class 5, ABC (aggregate base course), 21A or 21B, DGA (dense-graded aggregate), or ¾ minus depending on where you live. If a supplier’s list uses a name you don’t recognize, ask two questions: top size, and does it contain fines. That tells you whether it compacts.
What goes wrong
Ordering volume but paying for weight. You calculate 8.89 cubic yards, call and say “nine yards,” and get billed for nine tons — or the reverse, and a truck shows up with 12.6 tons. State the unit explicitly, and if you order by weight, ask what density they converted at.
Forgetting compaction on base layers. Order the exact loose volume for a base you intend to compact and you’ll finish 15% short with the roller already rented.
Assuming a ton is a ton. A rain-soaked load weighs more per cubic yard, so you get less stone for the same billed ton. It’s not fraud, it’s water — but it’s a reason to buy on a dry stretch when you can.
No crown and no drainage. A flat gravel driveway holds water and potholes within a season. Build a crown of about ¼ inch per foot of half-width — on a 12 ft drive, that’s about 1.5 inches higher at the center than at the edges — and make sure water has somewhere to go at the bottom.
Loose stone on a slope. Round or open-graded stone (pea gravel, #57) migrates downhill and gets thrown by tires. Anything steeper than gentle wants crusher run, which locks up, plus edging to hold it.

Delivery and spreading
Truck sizes. A tandem dump truck carries roughly 10–14 tons; a tri-axle roughly 16–20; a contractor’s dump trailer 3–6. Delivery is normally billed per load, so an 11-ton order can quietly become two loads and two fees. Ask what a full load is for your supplier and size your order to it.
Drop location. The bed of a dump truck rises well over 15 feet — check for branches and service drops. Loaded trucks are extremely heavy: keep them off septic fields, leach lines, buried utilities, new concrete aprons, and soft lawn. If the pile has to land on pavement, lay plywood, not a tarp; 10 tons will tear through a tarp.
Spreading effort. Stone is weight-limited in a wheelbarrow, not volume-limited: about 2 ft³ per comfortable load (roughly 200 lb), so a cubic yard is about 14 barrow loads and a ton is about 10. That makes a 14-ton driveway roughly 140 wheelbarrow loads — a full weekend with help, or a half-day with a rented skid steer or a tractor bucket. Some suppliers will spread as they drive with a gravel-spreader trailer, which is usually worth the upcharge on a long driveway.
Self-hauling. Stone is about 104 lb per cubic foot at 1.4 tons/yd³. A half-ton pickup bed filled just 4 inches deep (6 × 5 ft) is 10 ft³ — already about 1,040 lb. Check the payload sticker in the door jamb before you let anyone load you. Self-haul makes sense under a ton; past that, pay for delivery.
What it actually costs
Material is the easy part; the haul fee is what makes small orders expensive, because it doesn’t shrink with your order. Using an estimated $50 per ton and a $150 example haul fee:

Plug in your own quote — haul fees vary hugely and many suppliers add a per-mile charge past a set radius. The lesson holds regardless: a low price per ton from a distant quarry frequently loses to a higher price down the road, and splitting a job into two small deliveries is the most expensive way to buy stone. Always ask for the haul fee as a separate line, then divide by tons to compare suppliers honestly.
Refreshing an existing driveway
If the base is sound and you’re just tired of looking at bare spots, you need a 2-inch top-up, not a rebuild. For our 720 ft² driveway:
720 × 2 ÷ 324 = 4.44 yd³ × 1.4 = 6.22 tons × 1.10 = 7 tons
About $350 of material — a quarter of the cost of a fresh 4-inch layer. Rake the existing surface to break the crust and fill ruts before you spread, or the new stone just rides over the old potholes and settles back into them. Most driveways want this every few years; if you’re doing it annually, the base is the problem, not the surface.
