Paint for a 11×12 room

A 11×12 ft room with 8 ft ceilings has 368 sq ft of wall. For the standard 2 coats you need 3 gallons of paint (≈ $105), and about 7.1 hours of work. A realistic one-day job for one person, if you respect the recoat time on the can.

What a 11×12 room usually is

  • Standard bedroom
  • Home office with storage
  • Nursery with room to grow
  • Small living room

132 square feet is a comfortable standard bedroom — big enough for a double bed with circulation on both sides. The wall area sits in the band where two coats needs more than a gallon but nothing like two, so the honest answer is buy two and keep the remainder sealed for touch-ups. Leftover paint from the actual batch is worth more than the few dollars it cost.

Estimate for walls (2 coats by default). Coverage assumes smooth, primed drywall; bare or textured walls absorb more — pick "Textured." Small doors/windows are left in as a cut-in buffer. Cost is an estimate (as of June 2026) — confirm the price of your chosen paint.

📘 Sheen is a separate decision from gallons: which paint sheen for each room

What changes the answer for this 11×12 room

Four things move the gallon count on a 11×12 room, and they are worth knowing before you buy rather than after:

ScenarioWall areaGallons (2 coats)
Standard — 8 ft ceiling, smooth walls368 sq ft3
9 ft ceiling instead of 8 ft414 sq ft3
Textured or bare walls (250 sq ft/gal)368 sq ft3
Deducting 1 door + 2 windows318 sq ft2

Notice which of those actually changes the number. Surface texture usually does — a bare or heavily textured wall drops coverage from 350 to about 250 sq ft per gallon, which is enough to add a full gallon. Deducting openings usually does not: a door and two windows come to about 50 sq ft, and after rounding up to whole gallons the saving generally vanishes. That is why this site leaves openings in by default — the small surplus becomes your cut-in buffer and your touch-up paint. Sheen does not change this table — see which paint sheen.

Everything you need to buy

The paint is rarely the whole bill. For a 11×12 room with a 46 ft perimeter:

ItemQuantityEst. cost
Wall paint (2 coats)3gallons≈ $105
Primer (1 coat, if bare or a big colour change)2gallons≈ $56
Trim / baseboard enamel1quart (48.5 sq ft of trim)≈ $18
Painter’s tape1roll≈ $68
Drop cloths (9 × 12 ft)2
Roller covers, tray, brush2covers + kit
Estimated total≈ $247

Primer is listed as conditional because it genuinely is. Previously painted walls in good condition, going a similar colour, do not need it. Bare drywall, patched repairs, water stains, or a dramatic colour change all do — and skipping it there costs you an extra finish coat, which is more expensive than the primer was.

How long a 11×12 room takes

Prep — move furniture, mask, sheet the floor≈ 1.1 hours
Cutting in92 linear ft per coat
Painting — 2 coats, cut in and rolled≈ 6 hours
Total working time≈ 7.1 hours

That is hands-on time for one person at an unhurried pace, and it excludes drying. Add two to four hours between coats — the recoat time on the can, not the touch-dry time — so a job this size fills a full day. A second person cutting in while the first rolls does not halve the total, but it comes close.

The shape of this room, not just its size

A 11×12 room has a longest wall of 12 ft and a proportion of 1.09:1. That matters more than it sounds, because wall area alone does not tell you how the job will go — a 12×16 and a 14×14 room have exactly the same 448 sq ft of wall and the same perimeter, but they paint quite differently.

At 12 ft, every wall here is short enough to paint in one pass while the edge is still wet, which is the main reason smaller rooms come out looking more even than large ones. Lap marks are unlikely to be your problem — cutting in neatly is where the quality of the finish will be decided.

Being close to square, the four walls are near-identical, which makes this an easy room to plan: whatever rhythm you settle into on the first wall carries through the other three. It also means a single 9 × 12 ft drop cloth run along each wall covers the working area comfortably.

Worth knowing before you start

Label the leftover can with the room, the colour code, the sheen and the date, then store it somewhere that does not freeze. Latex paint that has frozen and thawed is ruined, and a garage shelf in a cold climate is the most common place good touch-up paint quietly dies.

The arithmetic

Wall area = 2 × (11 + 12) × 8 = 368 sq ft; × 2 coats = 736 sq ft; ÷ 350 sq ft per gallon (smooth drywall) = 2.1 → round up to 3gallons. Trim and time come from standard rates — 250 sq ft/hour rolling and 60 linear ft/hour cutting in — all documented in how we calculate.
